The two ancestors on the riverside of the splash covers represent Te Maro wearing a cloak and Te Rakau Is holding a sword in his hand. They were the first two Māori to come in contact with Captain Cook and met with a nasty end as a result.
These two ancestors are looking towards the rock known as Te Toka a Taiau used to be, which was their first meeting place with captain Cook and his men. Accordingly these two ancestors have dictated the direction this tauihu has been positioned.
