* [9:57–62] In these sayings Jesus speaks of the severity and the unconditional nature of Christian discipleship. Even family ties and lial obligations, such as burying one’s parents, cannot distract one no matter how brie y from proclaiming the kingdom of God. The rst two sayings are paralleled in Mt 8:19–22; see also notes there.
* [9:60] Let the dead bury their dead: i.e., let the spiritually dead (those who do not follow) bury their physically dead. See also note on Mt 8:22.
* [10:1–12] Only the Gospel of Luke contains two episodes in which Jesus sends out his followers on a mission: the rst (Lk 9:1–6) is based on the mission in Mk 6:6b–13 and recounts the sending out of the Twelve; here in Lk 10:1–12 a similar report based on Q becomes the sending out of seventy-two in this gospel. The episode continues the theme of Jesus preparing witnesses to himself and his ministry. These witnesses include not only the Twelve but also the seventy-two who may represent the Christian mission in Luke’s own day. Note that the instructions given to the Twelve and to the seventy-two are similar and that what is said to the seventy-two in Lk 10:4 is directed to the Twelve in Lk 22:35.
* [10:1] Seventy[-two]: important representatives of the Alexandrian and Caesarean text types read “seventy,” while other important Alexandrian texts and Western readings have “seventy-two.”
* [10:4] Carry no money bag. . .greet no one along the way: because of the urgency of the mission and the singlemindedness required of missionaries, attachment to material possessions should be avoided and even customary greetings should not distract from the ful llment of the task.
* [10:5] First say, ‘Peace to this household’: see notes on Lk 2:14 and Mt 10:13. * [10:6] A peaceful person: literally, “a son of peace.”

The Would-be Followers of Jesus.* 57d As they were proceeding on their journey someone said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.” 58Jesus answered him, “Foxes have dens and birds of the sky have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to rest his head.” 59And to another he said, “Follow me.” But he replied, “[Lord,] let me go first and bury my father.” 60But he answered him, “Let the dead bury their dead.* But you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God.” 61e And another said, “I will follow you, Lord, but first let me say farewell to my family at home.” 62[Tohim]Jesussaid,“Noonewhosetsahandtotheplowandlooksto what was left behind is fit for the kingdom of God.”
The Mission of the Seventy-two.*
1After this the Lord appointed seventy[-two]* others whom he
sent ahead of him in pairs to every town and place he intended 10
to visit.a 2He said to them, “The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few; so ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for his harvest.b 3Go on your way; behold, I am sending you like lambs among wolves.c 4* Carry no money bag,d no sack, no sandals;e and greet no one along the way. 5Into whatever house you enter, first say, ‘Peace to this household.’* 6If a peaceful person* lives there, your peace will rest on him; but if not, it will return to you. 7Stay in the same house and eat and drink what is offered to you, for the laborer deserves his payment. Do not move about from one house to another.f 8Whatever
9:51
This marks a turning point
in Luke’s Gospel. When Jesus begins his journey toward Jerusalem, he knows what he will encounter there: su ering and death. Over the next ten chapters, Jesus will continue his mission—teaching, healing, casting out demons—as he draws ever nearer to Jerusalem.
10:1
Jesus gives seventy-two disciples a special mission, to prepare his way by going ahead of him to
all the places he intends to go. They do not travel armed, in the safety of a caravan; instead, they go in twos, and they are totally vulnerable, “like lambs among wolves” (10:3). For those who welcome them, they have a gift to give—peace and healing. Wherever they are rejected, they are not to avenge the insult by calling down re as James and John suggested (Luke 9:54). Instead, they are simply to let
it go, shake the dust from their feet, and move on.
