St. Patrick’s Cathedral, the third church built at the corner North Plymouth Avenue and Platt Street in Rochester, was not ready in time for the 1868 installation of founding Bishop Bernard J. McQuaid and not fully complete until 1898. Yet shortly thereafter, growth at the nearby Eastman Kodak Company began to encircle the cathedral, isolating it from the rest of the city. St. Patrick’s was demolished after being sold to Kodak in 1937, and Sacred Heart Church became the temporary and later permanent diocesan cathedral.
