our lady of tHe lakeS catHolic community
Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Community was formed in 2008 and comprises St. Michael’s in Penn Yan, St. Januarius in Naples, St. Patrick’s in Prattsburgh and St. Theresa’s in Stanley.
SSt. Michael’s was founded in 1850 with Father Michael Gilbride as pastor. That year parishioners erected a frame church, which was enlarged in 1863. In 1901 Bishop Bernard J. McQuaid laid the cornerstone for a new church and returned to Penn Yan in 1902 to
dedicate the completed Gothic structure.
Bishop McQuaid was no stranger to Penn Yan, as he’d also visited in 1883 to dedicate the new St. Michael School. In 1955 the parish constructed a six-classroom addition to the original two-story brick structure. The school is still in operation today.
St. Januarius was founded in 1876 under the leadership of Father Dietrich Laurenzis, and a white frame church was built in 1878. In 1919 Father William Frank became St. Januarius’ rst resident pastor, and in 1965 construction began on a new church. Bishop Fulton J. Sheen dedicated the church in 1968.
