our lady of tHe Snow
Our Lady of the Snow was formed through the 2005 merger of St. Joseph’s in Weedsport
with St. John’s in Port Byron and St. Patrick’s in Cato.
St. Joseph’s was founded in 1854 under the direction of Father Jacob Kunze, pastor of St. Alphonsus Church in Auburn. At the time, St. Joseph’s was a mission of the Auburn parish. The early parishioners built a small wooden structure that served as the rst St. Joseph’s Church until 1958, when the parish built a white frame church. This second church was dedicated in 1859 by Bishop John Timon of the Diocese of Buffalo. Parishioners worshipped in this church for 100 years, but in 1957 it was deemed unsafe for further use and demolished. A new church was built on the site. In 1958 Auxiliary Bishop Lawrence
B. Casey dedicated the new church.
