St. Mary’s, located slightly north of the Pennsylvania border, dates back to 1845. One year later its rst church opened in neighboring Greenwood, with Father Thomas McEvoy the founding pastor. A new church was dedicated in 1875 in the hamlet of Rexville by Buffalo’s Bishop Stephen V. Ryan, but two years later it burned. Only seven months after
that, another church was opened, with Bishop Ryan again presiding at the dedication. That church lasted for more than a century before also being claimed by re in 1981. Yet one more rebuilding took place, and the current church was dedicated in 1984 by Bishop Matthew H. Clark.
