SS. mary & martHa PariSH
Ss. Mary & Martha Parish was formed by the 2012 merger of St. Francis of Assisi and St. Hyacinth churches.
Located just about a mile apart, each church brought its own unique traditions and cultural
backgrounds to Ss. Mary & Martha Parish.
St. Hyacinth was founded by Bishop Bernard J. McQuaid in 1905 at the request of Auburn’s Polish immigrants. The founding pastor was Father Stanislaus Szupa, and under his direction the church was completed and dedicated by Bishop McQuaid in 1907. A new church was built in 1964 and dedicated by Bishop James E. Kearney. After Father Szupa was reassigned in 1926, Conventual Franciscan friars from St. Anthony of Padua Province began providing pastoral care for St. Hyacinth. The friars continued to do so through the end of 2005, when diocesan priests again assumed St. Hyacinth’s pastoral care.
St. Francis of Assisi was founded in 1907 for Auburn’s Italian immigrants. With Father John Robotti as its founding pastor, the rst church was built in 1908. In 1951 a large shrine to Our Lady of Lourdes was erected, and the grotto, which remains today, attracted thousands of visitors. The current church, which features statues crafted from imported Italian marble, was built in 1958 and dedicated by Bishop Kearney in 1959.
Ss. Mary & Martha retains components of its cultural heritage, including an annual Italian festival and a thriving pierogi kitchen.
