St. franceS Xavier caBrini PariSH
In 2011, ve Rochester churches came together
as St. Frances Xavier Cabrini Parish, offering three worship sites in northeast Rochester: St. Michael, Our Lady of the Americas and Annunciation churches.
Tthe name of the parish re ects the immigrant heritages of its surrounding neighborhoods. Mother Cabrini, the parish’s patron, was a native of Italy who founded the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and aided immigrants and the poor. Her work began in New York City and then extended throughout the world in the late 1800s and
early 1900s.
The St. Frances Xavier Cabrini’s parish community continues today in that social-justice vein. Its ministries include St. Regis Food Cupboard, the St. Vincent De Paul Society, which provides basic needs items to area residents; and Matthew’s Closet, which provides clothes to families at low or no cost. Masses are celebrated in Spanish at St. Michael and Our Lady of the Americas to serve the parish’s large Hispanic community.
Known as the “Gothic cathedral,” St. Michael was founded in 1872 by German immigrants who rst lived in that area and was dedicated by Bishop Bernard J. McQuaid in 1890. Our Lady of Americas Church, formerly known as Corpus Christi Church, was built in 1902.
