St. martin de PorreS PariSH
St. Martin de Porres Parish comprises the churches of St. Columba/St. Patrick in Caledonia, St. Vincent DePaul in Churchville and St. Mary of Assumption in Scottsville.
St. Mary of the Assumption
The three churches became one parish on July 1, 2017, after operating as a cluster since 2011.
Irish immigrants looking to establish a Catholic church in Wheatland and the southeastern area of Chili had founded St. Mary of the Assumption. On May 10, 1843, they bought land for $800 where the present church and rectory stand. The cornerstone of the church building was laid by Bishop John Timon of the Diocese of Buffalo on Aug. 15, 1853. That same year, St. Mary of the Assumption’s pastor Father James McGlew decided there also should be a church for Mumford and Caledonia Catholics. Members of the congregation contributed $780 to purchase land for St. Patrick Church, which was built in 1854 as a mission of St. Mary of the Assumption. In 1868, both churches became part of the newly established Diocese of Rochester.
