A native of New York City, Bishop McQuaid was vicar general of the Diocese of Newark, N.J., at the time of his appointment to Rochester and also had been founding president of Seton Hall University. He was consecrated a bishop on July 12, 1868, and installed in Rochester on July 16 of that year.
Bishop McQuaid was a great proponent of Catholic education. Upon his arrival in Rochester he began work to establish a system of tuition-free parochial elementary schools.
His desire to educate also extended to future priests. In 1870 he established St. Andrew’s Preparatory Seminary for aspiring priests, and in 1893 founded St. Bernard’s Seminary for the training of local clergy.
Joseph Sibbel Studios’ bronze statue of Bishop Bernard J. McQuaid, originally commissioned by the priests of the diocese for installation at St. Bernard’s Seminary in 1930, was moved to Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in 1982.
