Thomas F. Hickey, second Bishop of Rochester (1909-1928).
As he neared his 75th birthday, Bishop McQuaid began searching among his priests for an auxiliary bishop to assist him. Father Thomas F. Hickey, rector of St. Patrick’s Cathedral and diocesan vicar general, was subsequently named as coadjutor with right of succession and consecrated a bishop on May 24, 1905.
Ill health struck Bishop McQuaid in 1908, preventing him from attending a Mass marking the 40th anniversary of his episcopal consecration in July of that year. His health continued to fail in the latter part of 1908, and he died on Jan. 18, 1909.
Bishop Hickey (1909-28) became Rochester’s second bishop immediately upon Bishop McQuaid’s death. He was the rst native- born Rochesterian to become a Catholic bishop.
