St. Pius X Church was founded in the 1850s
by Irish immigrants in the western Monroe County suburb of Chili and originally was known as St. Feehan Parish.
IIt was under the pastoral care of St. Mary Church in Scottsville until 1869 when Father William
Mulharon became the rst resident pastor.
Its original building was completed in 1855 and was called “the swamp church” because of the land on which it was built. The parish built a new church at 3000 Chili Avenue in the 1950s and renamed it St. Pius X in honor of the pope who reigned from 1903-14. Parishioners celebrated their rst Mass in the new church on Christmas Day 1956, and Bishop James E. Kearney dedicated the church on May 19, 1957. The original St. Feehan’s church building is now located at the Genesee Country Village & Museum in Mumford and remains in limited use for such special celebrations as weddings.
St. Pius Tenth School opened its doors on Sept. 8, 1959, and continues to operate as a pre-K-6 school. The school and a parish center, which had been built in 2005, served as the location for Masses following a January 2015 re that destroyed the church building. Due to extensive structural damage, the building had to be razed.
In 2017 a new church was being built at the same location. It was to offer seating for 650 arranged in a semicircle as in the former church.
