Pope Pius XII elevated Archbishop Mooney to the College of Cardinals on Jan. 1, 1946. He died Aug. 25, 1958, in Rome while attending the conclave to elect a new pope.
During Archbishop Mooney’s installation as archbishop of Detroit on Aug. 3, 1937, it was announced that his successor in Rochester would be Salt Lake City’s Bishop James E. Kearney (1937-66). The Iowa native was installed as Rochester’s fth bishop on Nov. 11, 1937, in the newly named pro-cathedral.
Less than a year after becoming Rochester’s bishop, he advocated for the City of Rochester to create a plan to ght the economic problems brought about by the Great Depression. He also encouraged several religious orders to set up ministries in the diocese.
