Like his predecessors, Bishop Kearney was supportive of Catholic education for children. Fundraising campaigns in the 1950s and 1960s helped build
Catholic high schools around the diocese, including McQuaid Jesuit High School in Rochester, Bishop Kearney High School in Irondequoit and Notre
Dame High School in Elmira.
A number of fundraisers during his tenure also bene ted Catholic higher education. Proceeds from campaigns in the 1940s were used to construct St. John Fisher College as well as new homes for Nazareth College and St. Bernard’s Seminary. Funds raised during a campaign tied to the bishop’s 81st birthday – called the Joint College Fund – were used to construct new buildings for Nazareth and St. John Fisher, as well as the diocese’s Becket Hall, a house of studies for
college-level seminarians.
