Also on the St. Bernard’s menu of offerings are continuing-education opportunities as well as special events and guest speakers. In addition, St. Bernard’s conducts a four-year formation program for men pursuing ordination to the permanent diaconate.
In early 2015, Father George Heyman assumed the role of president from Sister Patricia Schoelles, SSJ, who had served in that position since 1993.
Meanwhile, St. Bernard’s original seminary complex at 2260 Lake Ave. is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It has served since 1996 as a privately operated residence for senior citizens.
“Housing the elderly was a gracious use for the venerable structures,” reads the diocesan history by Father McNamara, who taught church history at the seminary from 1938 until its closing. “St. Bernard’s Park (the complex’s current name) remains a monument to the 2,300 priests and 27 bishops trained there to serve the church on ve continents.”
St. Bernard’s School of Theology and Ministry is situated on French Road in Pittsford, near the Sisters of St. Joseph Motherhouse.
