Just eight days after the cemetery’s consecration, Claude Martin Duffy, the child of prominent Rochester couple, Walter and Teresa O’Dea Duffy, became the rst person to be buried in at Holy Sepulchre. All Souls Chapel was added in 1876, and a crypt that houses the remains of Bishops McQuaid, Thomas Hickey, John F. O’Hern and James E. Kearney was built in 1938.
In subsequent years, Holy Sepulchre expanded its grounds to include shrine sections and mausoleums. Construction began in 1978 on the Resurrection Garden Mausoleum, which includes six crypts for bishops in the tower. Auxiliary Bishops John McCafferty and Dennis W. Hickey are entombed there. All Saints Mausoleum was added in 1993.
Although cremation was once prohibited in the Catholic Church, the Vatican ruled in 1963 that it could be permissible. When permission for
the practice was written into Canon Law in 1983, the cemetery also added columbaria, niches in its mausoleums and cremation graves to accept cremated remains.
The newest addition to Holy Sepulchre is Christ Our Light Mausoleum, which was dedicated in 2008. That same year, construction began on Ascension Garden, a 109-acre facility located at 1900 Pinnacle Road in the town of Henrietta. The new cemetery, which opened in 2010, is Holy Sepulchre’s rst auxiliary site and offers more than 100,000 burial spaces.
