Bishop Joseph L. Hogan joins area clergy of other denominations in November 1973 for the First Genesee Ecumenical Ministries Assembly.
As shepherd of the Rochester Diocese, Bishop Hogan continued implementation of the decrees of Vatican II. In September 1972, he launched a diocesan Year of Renewal, calling local Catholics to examine their consciences about conforming to the changes brought about by the council.
Since Vatican II had encouraged ecumenism and interfaith collaboration, Bishop Hogan had the diocese join Genesee Ecumenical Ministries (later renamed the Greater Rochester Community of Churches), and he worked with the local Jewish community on social issues of mutual concern.
Bishop Joseph L. Hogan prays with faculty and students during a January 1974 Catholic-school tour in Geneva.
