Pope John Paul II ordains Father Matthew H. Clark, a priest of the Diocese of Albany, to the episcopacy in St. Peter’s Basilica, Rome, on May 27, 1979. The announcement of the new bishop’s appointment as eighth Bishop of Rochester had been made on May 2, and he was installed in Rochester on June 26, 1979.
On May 2, 1979, Bishop Hogan had announced that Father Matthew H. Clark, a priest of the Albany Diocese then serving as spiritual director at the North American College in Rome, would become the eighth bishop of Rochester. He was consecrated a bishop on May 27, 1979, in Rome and installed in a public ceremony at Rochester’s Community War Memorial on June 26 of that year.
Like his predecessors, Bishop Clark (1979- 2012) continued to implement the changes of Vatican II. The council had restored the permanent diaconate, so in 1982 he ordained the rst class of permanent deacons for the Rochester Diocese. A 2003-05 renovation he oversaw at Sacred Heart Cathedral brought the building more in line with the council’s liturgical guidelines.
