Holy Apostles was the rst mission church
of the former St. Patrick Cathedral, founded to serve rapid growth that was taking place
in northwest Rochester during the 1880s.
TThe church was founded in 1884, and Bishop Bernard J. McQuaid appointed Father Tim Murphy to be Holy Apostles’ rst pastor. Ground was broken for a new church in September of that year, and Bishop McQuaid dedicated Holy
Apostles Church on Feb. 15, 1885.
The parish continued to grow, and a bigger church was built 13 years later. The current building at 530 Lyell Avenue at the corner of Austin Street was dedicated March 28, 1897, by Bishop McQuaid.
A spirit of evangelization continues at the church, which offers neighborhood dinners, bilingual religious education classes and Bible study for children and adults.
In 1998, Holy Apostles’ former convent became home to the parish’s Mother Theresa Missionary Center, which offers a clothing closet and serves as a distribution site for the Southwest Ecumenical Ministries’ food cupboard. Holy{Apostles’ campus also includes a neighborhood drop- in center run by the Sisters of St. Joseph in the former rectory building.
