A new era for Osmaston
OSCAR (Osmaston Community Association of Residents) was formed in
January 2011 to help deliver a community led regeneration of Osmaston,
including the site formerly occupied by the Rolls-Royce factory. Supported
by Derby Homes and the Regeneration Team within Derby City Council,
OSCAR has already been able to tap into funding available through the
Housing and Communities Agency (HCA) to build new homes in the area.
OSCAR, Derby Homes, Derby City Council and Keepmoat formed the
Osmaston Regeneration Partnership to manage and deliver regeneration
activities within the Osmaston triangle. In addition to new housing, the
schools formerly known as Nightingale Infants and Junior Schools were
refurbished to support their amalgamation into Osmaston Primary School.
The views of the local community were gathered through surveys and
community engagement and built into the project development plan. Most
of the existing houses in the area were three-bedroomed homes, built
in the 1920s to accommodate Rolls-Royce workers and their families.
Almost 100 years later, the industrial landscape and the community within
it had changed. To address local needs, the first phase along Elton Road and
Glossop Street created 80 new homes, of which 40 were affordable, available
for social rent managed by Derby Homes. One and two-bedroomed houses
and bungalows were included, giving Osmaston residents opportunities to
downsize within the neighbourhood they know and love.
Through OSCAR, local residents have taken a hands-on approach to planning
and implementing this project. They were involved in key decisions such as
choosing a developer and deciding how the properties should be designed.
The Osmaston Regeneration Partnership has ignited fresh interest in the
area as a place to live and work. Whilst proud of its heritage, the community
is now focusing its efforts on moving forward towards a bright and
optimistic future. The completion of the first phase of new housing is only
the beginning of an exciting new chapter in both the history and changing
face of Osmaston.
