 TRIATHLON
Rhian::
“I am honoured to be given such a prestigious award. I have been involved in Triathlon for 20 years now and the moment I finished my first race I knew that it would become part of my lifestyle. It is true, I have competed over all those years, in local races as well as World and European Age Group Championships. I have had the privilege of watching triathlon grow so much especially from the year
we won our first GB gold medal at the Olympics from Alistair Brownlee in 2012.
Welsh Triathlon has produced some great athletes over the years, those who have inspired me and have helped to bring Triathlon into the public domain, through their great achievements, the likes of Leanda Cave, Helen Jenkins and of course Non Stanford. It's wonderful to think that we have been a part of that - by inspiring others to create their own goals, and providing a platform through GOG Triathlon for them to achieve them. I feel very proud of both my achievements competing for my club and my country as well as the community we have created in North Wales.
This year, moving into the 50-54 age group, was a little scary, partly because I am getting older and with that comes a slowing down of times and fitness levels, partly because I hadn't achieved what I had wanted over the years and nor did I know how I would compare on an international level. I went into this year full of excitement about the unknown and with big plans having already qualified for the European and World Age Group Championships, I hadn't attended one of these for a few years (10 to be exact) and didn't know what to expect. So, I couldn't quite believe it when I went on to win both - a dream come true, one might say!!
The Welsh Triathlon Series has had a big impact on our club, bringing us together to race for our team as a team. It has been brilliant to be able to compete against the so many great athletes in Wales yet have the team points for everyone to be involved. Competing in the competition also gave me a big confidence boost to go ahead and attempt the double this year. A big thank you to everyone at Welsh Triathlon, GOG Triathlon Club and all those who support and volunteer to help bring our Triathlon Community to the foreground of the public, and local authorities.”
Amy Jenner, Head of Development at Triathlon Cymru
