PÊL-FASGED / BASKETBALL
Conwy Thunder has been running regular sessions since 2011 with a real surge in interest after the London 2012 Paralympics. Since then there have been countless success stories which has including players playing for the North Wales Knights, Wales and even having players represent Great Britain within performance programmes and junior age groups. However, the club’s greatest achievements to date will always be based around individuals who have improved their health and wellbeing through regular physical exercise and engaging in an inclusive, social, safe environment.
DID YOU KNOW?
Wheelchair basketball can be played by both disabled and non-disabled people and specialised sports wheelchairs are provided by the club.
It is ideal for those who find it difficult to play ‘running sport’ and there is a classification system which ensures competition is fair for those with less physical function.
Individuals with cerebral palsy, lower limb amputations, spina-bifida, spinal injuries, long bone replacement, leg length difference, polio, significant knee injuries and club
foot, amongst other impairments, can pursue performance pathways not available to non-disabled players, with each individual given a points rating based on functional movement in a sports chair.
Wheelchair basketball is a mixed gender sport at IAG and National Leagues with additional competitions available for juniors and women. Conwy Thunder have sessions for juniors and seniors, as well as experienced players or complete novices.
