INSPIRE A GENERATION SUCCESS FOR CONWY THUNDER
Conwy Thunder Wheelchair Sports Club are celebrating a fantastic start to their first ever season within a British Wheelchair Basketball competition.
The Penrhyn Bay based club, who offer weekly sessions at Creuddyn Leisure Centre, entered the 2024/25 Inspire a Generation League to give new opportunities for its members and to enhance the sporting pathway within Conwy.
British Wheelchair Basketball’s ‘Inspire a Generation’ programme’s primary objective is to develop new, fun and recreational local opportunities for individuals to engage with wheelchair basketball, ensuring increased levels of participation and to sustain sport, physical activity and an active lifestyle in the longer term.
As opposed to BWB’s National Leagues which offer more competitive regular fixtures with a strict classification policy, the IAG programme is designed as an entry level competition where the referees provide support to players who are still learning the rules and are yet to fully understand all of the
intricacies of the fast paced, end-to-end sport. It’s also an ideal opportunity for players, parents, coaches and officials to gain valuable experience, before deciding whether they want to pursue the competitive opportunities on offer, or just attend weekly sessions to socialise and use physical activity to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Split over three rounds, Conwy Thunder will play against Denbighshire based Rhyl Raptors as well as Cheshire Phoenix in the UK’s North West Division. The first round was held on Sunday 23rd February in Rhyl before Conwy hosted their home round on Saturday 8th March. Conwy Thunder currently lead the rankings and head into the final round in Ellesmere Port on 29th March unbeaten however the club’s focus is very much on wellbeing and development regardless of results.
Thunder’s Coach, Paul Jones, said “The players have been fantastic and I’m really proud of everybody involved who has helped. Playing two games on one day is tough but they all did great and this tournament is a perfect opportunity for players to try new things and develop their individual skills. It’s been a great experience for everyone to show their spirit, dedication and commitment to the club.”
