In the distance I could see rain. It was the kind of rain that keeps to its side of the sky, afraid of the beaming sun claiming its fair half. For a few miles we split nature’s mood swings. Rain was to one side and happy sunshine to the other. It was then that the highway swerved, trying to pick a mood. “I think we are going to get wet.” I laughed. The sky began a pattern of drop, drop-drop, drop-drop-drop. And, in the true spirit of my own father’s reasoning, I sped up. Obviously if you go fast enough the rain will glance off the windshield and over you. My plan worked for about half a cornfield.
Drop-drop turned to gush-gush. We pulled over and quickly put the top up. We were dampened but our spirits were not.
At the next highway intersection, we aimed for blue sky. Leaving
the rain claimed fields behind us. Lowering the top again we warmed our skin in the last of the day’s sunlight. We laughed and sang along to the next song. Yes, beautiful memories of moments are all we really have.
