baby is just hungry. Do not worry about it. She is just fussy and does
not really want anything. How in the world does she know? Well, I
guess God put that into a mother. They can understand tears and
understand the cry. But I guess that is just part of the reality that tears
are an eloquent communication with the Lord.
I think if you are like me you probably began this whole section on
prayer thinking, boy, I hope I learn something; I do not know much
about prayer. Well, let me tell you this. There is a good chance you pray
a lot more then you think you do, and with more effect than you thought.
And the reason is because our God is great.
When my sister’s three years old was run over by a drunk driver you can
only imagine what she was going through. One of the things that she did
was, she withdrew. She went almost into a catatonic stupor. We were
talking, and the doctor said she has got to cry. She has to let go. She has
to release everything that is inside. And God finally set her free at the
grave site and the Lord used the words in the Gospel “Go your way; your
son lives,” which opened the flood tides for her.
But what happens when I am so troubled I cannot speak? And what
happens when I cannot groan? And what happens when I cannot even
sigh? And what happens when I cannot shed tears? What happens in a
situation like when my sister just could not cry? Well, Psalms takes you
even deeper. Psalm 69:3,
“I am weary with my crying; my throat is parched.” And then it says,
“My eyes fail while I wait for my God.”
What does that mean, “My eyes fail while I wait for my God?”
Literally, it is my eyes fail “looking upward”. In other words, it is just
the direction of the heart. When you cannot cry, it is just looking toward
the Lord. You do not know what to do. You do not know what to say.
You do not know who to call. You do not know anything. You just sort
of sigh and look up........you have prayed. God sees the look as prayer.
We do not understand prayer. That is why we do not know how to pray.
But I promise you this, friends in Christ. If it does not come out of your
mouth as words, it will come out of your belly as a groan. If it does not
come out your belly as a groan, it will come out of your nose as a sigh.
If it does not come out of your nose as a sigh, it will come out of your
eyes as tears. If it does not come out of your eyes as tears, it will come
out as a turning of your heart to the heavens. God has recorded all those
prayers. True prayers. And you think: What shall I say? How do I
