one other things you could add to the list. Unity isn’t common
doctrine either. Some people have the idea that if we can sign
the same creed and agree on the same doctrine, then we’ll be
unified. Not so!
The book of Ephesians, because it presents the spiritual Church,
gives you the definition of unity. “Mutual Headship”. Seeing
that, is going to save you from all kinds of legalistic struggles
trying to create unity. Suppose at this moment Christ is my
complete Head and I’m living for the pleasure of my head. Let’s
say at this moment Christ is Jack’s complete head and he’s living
for the pleasure of his head. Because Christ is my complete head
and Christ is Jack’s complete head, we have perfect unity
between us. That’s Christian unity, mutual Headship. When my
right hand works for the pleasure of my head. And my head says
“move”, it moves. When my head says “stop”, it stops.
My head also tells the other hand what to do. When I’m healthy
and everything is right, my hands don’t collide. They both are
living for the pleasure of the head. I don’t have to have a
members meeting in the morning to say, “Okay, here’s the orders;
right foot, you’re going to go first. Left foot you follow. Hand,
make sure you do this and then make sure the other arm does
that.” You don’t have to have a meeting of the members in order
to get along. That’s the spiritual Church. When the people of God
are living in relationship with the head, they are all getting along
fine. That’s unity as God gives it in the Church.
Let’s say there’s a Christian out there in the heart of Africa, New
Guinea, or off in the land of India, and he has Christ as his
complete head. You may never meet that brother or sister but do
you realize that you are in complete unity. Only if you have Christ
as your complete head! That’s the spiritual Church. That’s the
Church in Ephesians. Christ is the head and we’re the body.
Every Christian is a member of that body and is related to that
head. All of this talk about loving one another and caring for one
another. Getting involved in each other’s problems. Most of the
time that is totally superficial, just chopping off weeds at the
surface. It will work as an expression of unity but never as the
