saints”. Everybody else was saying, “Paul is the greatest
Christian,” but he reminded himself who he really was. Here’s the
second warning. It has to do with the “Christian psychology
movement”, that is ripping up the people of God. Christian books
are being written, suggesting believers analyze themselves. It’s
a call to look inside, discover your problem, and give it to Jesus.
Beloved, you have no more ability to discover your own problem
than you have to solve your problem. It’s a very unhealthy thing
to introspect. Your prayers should always be, “Search me, oh
God, and know my heart.”
You don’t want to look down into that dump. It will scare you to
death. If you are out of sorts with the Lord, it will drive you to a
building, a bridge, or worse. You don’t need to look inside. You
see, there’s a right way to say, “I’m nobody, the least of all the
saints”, and a wrong way!
When the Apostle Paul said it, he wasn’t full of self-pity. He
didn’t say, “Oh, I’m a nobody. Poor me. I’m a big flop. I’m no
good.” He had a revelation of who he was in Christ. God had
opened his eyes to the mystery. He had clarity. I love the fact
that in the same verse where he said, “I am least of all the
saints,” he also said,
“Unfathomable riches in Christ.”
“Sure, ‘I’m least of all the saints’. That’s one side of the truth.
The other side is, ‘Unfathomable riches in Christ.’ ” The Lord
is giving us a safe-guard from looking up to men, and down on
yourself. The principle is to always to look away from everything
else, and unto Jesus. Hebrews 12:2,
“Looking (away from everything else) unto Jesus, the Author
and Finisher of your faith.”
