Ihab Kamel, M.D., Ph.D.

Background
Dr. Ihab Kamel earned his M.S. from University of Michigan and his M.D. from Cairo
University in Cairo, Egypt. He completed his residency at New York Medical College and
performed a fellowship in body imaging at BID Medical Center in Boston, MA. He joined the
Johns Hopkins faculty in 2000 as an Assistant Professor. In 2005, he became Associate
Professor and in 2013 became Professor of Radiology and Oncology.
Dr. Kamel received the Fleischner Young Investigator Award from the Harvard Medical
School in 2000. In 2004, he received the Faculty Teacher of the Year award for the
Department of Radiology at Johns Hopkins Hospital and was recognized in 2008 as a Melvin
M. Figley Fellow in Radiology Journalism from the American Roentgen Ray Society (ARRS). In
2015, Dr. Kamel was awarded the Honored Educator Award from the Radiological Society of
North America (RSNA).
Dr. Kamel is an expert in utilizing functional MRI to quantify early tumor response to therapy.
He is also an authority in hepatobiliary and pancreatic imaging. He has coauthored over 200
articles in peer-reviewed journals and 15 book chapters. Dr. Kamel sits on numerous national
and international radiological society committees.
