Science panel - The respiration cycle
                                                                   This simplified representation showing how the buccal
                                                                   and opercular cavities expand and contract in the
                                                                   respiration cycle causing water to flow across the gill
                                                                   filaments isn’t anatomically correct.
                                                                   In order to simplify these two diagrams as far as possible
                                                                   the opercular and the gill filaments have been drawn as
                                                                   would be seen looking down from above but the mouth
                                                                   and oral valve have been rotated through 90° and only
                                                                   a few gill filaments are shown.  The respective actions
                                                                   of the buccal and opercular cavities and the way water
                                                                   flows through the gills is unchanged.
                                                                   Respiration happens in two phases.
                                                                   In the first phase, the buccal cavity begins to expand with
                                                                   the opercular cavity following and expanding slightly later.
                                                                   The resulting negative pressure in the cavities opens the
                                                                   oral valve and closes the opercular valves causing water
                                                                   to be drawn, first into the buccal cavity, and then through
                                                                   the gill filaments into the opercular cavity.
                                                                   In the second phase, as the buccal cavity begins to
                                                                   contract, the positive pressure closes the oral valve so
                                                                   the water in the buccal cavity is forced through the gill
                                                                   filaments.  The opercular cavity then begins to contract
                                                                   and the combined positive pressure opens the opercular
                                                                   valves so that the oxygen depleted water is expelled.
