Science panel - The respiration cycle
This simplified representation showing how the buccal
and opercular cavities expand and contract in the
respiration cycle causing water to flow across the gill
filaments isn’t anatomically correct.
In order to simplify these two diagrams as far as possible
the opercular and the gill filaments have been drawn as
would be seen looking down from above but the mouth
and oral valve have been rotated through 90° and only
a few gill filaments are shown. The respective actions
of the buccal and opercular cavities and the way water
flows through the gills is unchanged.
Respiration happens in two phases.
In the first phase, the buccal cavity begins to expand with
the opercular cavity following and expanding slightly later.
The resulting negative pressure in the cavities opens the
oral valve and closes the opercular valves causing water
to be drawn, first into the buccal cavity, and then through
the gill filaments into the opercular cavity.
In the second phase, as the buccal cavity begins to
contract, the positive pressure closes the oral valve so
the water in the buccal cavity is forced through the gill
filaments. The opercular cavity then begins to contract
and the combined positive pressure opens the opercular
valves so that the oxygen depleted water is expelled.
before it becomes a problem. Empirical evidence shows we use on ponds should last 24 to 36 hours. After a power
that nitrifying bacteria in a closed system like an enclosed failure, as a precaution, the ammonia and nitrite levels
canister aquarium filter can easily survive without oxygen should be monitored closely for a few days to ensure that
for 12 to 15 hours and that bacteria in open filters like those the depleted oxygen levels in the biofilter did not cause long
term damage to the bacterial colonies.
