The Closing Chapter
After the defeat of the Spanish Armada, Drake returned to Plymouth and in 1581, he became mayor. He lived in Plymouth until Queen Elizabeth enlisted him for one more voyage against Spanish in early 1596. The expedition was a complete failure. Spain was able defend the English attacks, and Drake came down with fever and dysentery. He died in late January 1596 off the coast of Puerto Bello, which is now Panama.
