The Holy Cross School, Trinity Park, Cairns, North Queensland,
which won the overall school award at the 2018 Ipswich Poetry
Feast, is very proud of the achievements of its pupils. The school
set a goal in 2018 to provide increased opportunities for High

                                                              Surfing on Waikiki beach –
Oh, the sun sets too soon,
AUSTRALIA but surfing on Waikiki beach
                                                              is different with the moon.
by Max Stanevich For the moon comes out to haunt us
in ocean waves the old ghosts come,
From walking along soft Bondi Beach but we know how to greet them
to Hasties Swamp, where you don’t want a leach, and what is to be done.
        In the Great Sandy Desert,
feel the harsh Aussie heat. On the barbecue cooking is great Aussie We’ve been here for many years
meat. and every year’s the same.
The screams, the shouts that pierce our
The glorious sunset above Ancient Uluru and at the wide grassy dreams they put our town to shame.
          plains
feeding native kangaroo. For many past have surfed this break
Feel the thundering of the mighty Baron Falls and the joyous amongst the wave’s white foam,
laughing as the kookaburra calls and many a woman has cried out
to sea to bring her loved one home.
Where nature is perfect – no fear of failure.
A land of Hope and Freedom… This is Australia. But the sea is a savage master,
it shows iron will and no care,
FOREST and so we come to honour the dead
and swim into the waves’ deep lair.
by Violette Dobbie We’ve called up all the family,
we’ve called up all our friends,
I give shelter to all animals big and small against hope, we are all praying
with my old trees standing proud and tall. that this adventure will soon end.
The depth of my presence sends
calmness to us. All sorts of monsters call to us,
Tell me your secrets, in me you can trust emerge out of the deep,
but when they see our surfing army
Rivers full of water with fish swimming deep, they’ll bid a quick retreat.
but I hold my secrets carefully,
for I have promises to keep. The battle has been fought and won
I invite through the moonlight with the ocean and the tide
for the animals to see, and now the battle is over
the soft humming of cicadas and it is we who have survived.
brings peace and tranquillity. Surfing on Waikiki beach --
The touch of my leaves brings hope, no doubt Oh the sun sets soon.
and I send my little seedlings to begin to sprout. NOW surfing on Waikiki beach
I feed all my children, that’s just Nature’s way. is NO different with the moon.
I care for my children carefully, every day.
