  INSPIRING IMPACT
Serving his community is what Dewey Mitchell has been doing for over four decades. Many service groups, charities, and business affiliations have benefited from his volunteer service, generosity, and wisdom. A true-born champion, Dewey, has been setting the bar for achievement from a very young age. He excelled in a variety
of youth sports and spent long days playing
with friends and building skills at his local St. Petersburg YMCA. His competitive nature and drive led him to the opportunity to play football for the University of Alabama under legendary Coach Paul “Bear” Bryant. Dewey also excelled in the sport of Judo, earning many prestigious gold, silver, and bronze medals as well as leading the U.S. Olympic Judo Team as Captain in the 1984 Olympics.
Through his experience in collegiate and competitive sports, he developed strong ethics and determination to do good and give back, fueling his compassion to ensure that others could benefit from the same experiences that he did as a child growing up in the Y. His desire to bring a Y facility to his local community inspired him to help lead a community effort to bring
the cause to the Pasco area. Dewey served as Chairman of the James P. GIlls Family YMCA Capital Campaign Committee. With a heart to
support our youth, the Mitchell Family made
a meaningful capital gift during the campaign and named the Teen Center at the James P. GIlls Family YMCA.
Dewey has continued to support the YMCA through gifts to the Annual Giving Campaign, helping to provide financial assistance to keep the Y open to all and provide essential programs to individuals and families in need. He has also supported additional capital projects so that the Y can expand services to meet the growing needs of the Pasco community. In addition,
the Mitchell family is the newest Legacy Club member, ensuring that their support will go on for generations to come.
