TOGETHER WE SERVED
The year 2020 reminded us that generous contributions are crucial to the Y’s success in the community.
As a leading 4-star charity committed to strengthening community, philanthropy is at the root of all we do to fulfill our mission.
The YMCA of the Suncoast takes our fiduciary and governance responsibilities seriously, following sound fiscal management practices. Committed to accountability and transparency, the Suncoast Y holds a coveted 4-star top rating from Charity Navigator, America’s largest independent charity evaluator. The exceptional rating demonstrates our trustworthiness to the public as we join a preeminent group of charities working to overcome the world’s most pressing challenges.
Also this past year, we
found ourselves starting and strengthening many vital partnerships because of the COVID-19 pandemic. What a blessing it is to work together with other mission-driven organizations to keep our community strong! Despite every obstacle, challenge or
setback, our Y persevered... making a greater impact than ever before. In fact, our efforts earned us the prestigious One Tampa Bay award from the Tampa Bay Business Journal.
We are humbled by our donors’ immense support, including our members who stayed with us, donating their monthly membership dues to support our efforts during our temporary closure this spring. Thanks to our donors and members, we were able to reinvest more than $6.28M back into the community through direct scholarships and subsidized programs to ensure that our YMCA is
FOR ALL.
Your generosity allows us to open our doors to kids and families regardless of their financial capacity, enabling your Suncoast Y to effectively serve 85,000 individuals in 2020 regardless of a 9-week shutdown. We appreciate your continued trust in and commitment to the YMCA mission and cause.
YMCA OF THE SUNCOAST | ANNUAL REPORT 2020
President/CEO G. Scott Goyer of the YMCA of the Suncoast calls Immediate Past Board Chair, Ms. Laura Maiocco, a behind the scenes “champion” during the COVID-19 pandemic, literally. Laura even made a video from the living room of her home to post to our YMCA of the Suncoast website. She communicated with members about what all the Ys and its dedicated staff were doing to fill the needs of the community, like providing youth care for essential workers and partnering with Feeding Tampa Bay, and other food banks. Laura asked members to stay with the Y and reiterated the Y’s cause and mission, encouraging them to give back so while the Ys were temporarily closed for purpose we could stay open to secure
a Y for our future. She also shared how the Y was there for her and her family. As the board chair, she acted quickly with staff to change procedures and gave direction to respond appropriately to community needs. She continues to define leadership, guiding volunteers through that process. At the same time, Laura led a task force that helped create a new strategic plan for our board
and staff to help lead our Y into the future. Additionally, Laura spearheaded fundraising opportunities, raising $95,000 in special contributions during the middle of a pandemic. Thank you for your support, Laura.
