1 INTRODUCTION

Being the 3rd largest city of Maharashtra, ‘the orange city’ Nagpur houses a
population of 25 lakhs. It is also the winter capital of the state and the Nagpur
Metropolitan Area is the 13th largest urban conglomeration in India. It has also
recently been ranked as the cleanest city and the second greenest city of India. A
major commercial and political centre, it is a major trade centre. Nagpur is also
declared, "Tiger Capital of India " as it connects many Tiger Reserves in India to the
world. Recently, Government of India selected Nagpur as a Model City for National
Clean Air Mission by allocating 25 crores for the plan. This project will be handled by
Nagpur's own NEERI. It lies precisely at the center of the country on the Deccan

plateau of the Indian Peninsula and has a mean altitude of 310 meters above sea
           level.

The world is progressing at a faster pace with cities and urban centres being at its
peak progression. These logistic hubs are trying to cater to the ever-increasing needs
with the infrastructure facilities facing a lot of burden. In countries like India, the
urban infrastructure is stretched to the limit and requires very effective solutions. In
such rapid development times, urban mass transit now becomes a viable solution
which solves major urban transit dilemmas.

The main objective of any urban transit system would be to cater to the needs of the
population hassle-free. Nagpur metro aims to provide a safe, reliable, efficient,
affordable, commuter friendly and environmentally sustainable rapid public
transport system for the Nagpur Metro Region. It is pioneer in integrating place of
living to the place of employment in the model termed as “Transit Oriented
Development”. This model comprises of having compact development
supplementing the consumer more means of transportation and housing choices
thereby creating more walkable sustainable communities.
