IOWA CITY, IA
HIGHLIGHTS
The state plays an important part in the
nation’s agricultural industry, producing corn
and soybeans and raising livestock for
consumption and export. Iowa’s agriculture
fuels a growing biofuels industry and the state
is one of the nation’s largest producers of wind
energy. In addition to large-scale farming, the
area has a thriving consumer-supported
agriculture sector, food-cooperatives and
urban farms that focus on sustainability.
The University of Iowa also houses numerous
research centers and one of the nation's
largest academic medical centers. Research at
the university includes cutting-edge projects,
such as the Virtual Soldier, the development of
the Ponseti Method for treating club foot, the
UI Research Park, a public-private business
start-up program, and environmental and
sustainability initiatives, many developed in
the aftermath of the historic 2008 flood.
