 CARROLL, Keenan “Funky”
  Consultant Radiologist, Bahamas
I am currently retired having made the move to retirement in November 2016 and completing the transition in February 2017. After our graduation in 1974 Carol, my wife, and I were married and then completed our internship in Trinidad at the San Fernando general hospital. We then, after passing the ECFMG exam, were accepted to pursue specialty training in Hospitals in Detroit Michigan.
I started a surgical residency only to find that my marked colour blindness made my pursuit of this career difficult and even more so, dangerous. I switched gears and entered a diagnostic radiology residency and there saw the light, so to speak. I became the first fellowship trained Neuroradiologist in the Henry Ford Hospital’s history.
I returned home in 1980 as the first Bahamian Board-certified radiologist; the rest is history. Approximately 15 years later I pursued a fellowship in breast imaging at Cleveland Clinic and subsequently came under the tutelage of Laszlo Tabar the author of the Swedish two county trial for screening mammography (he is considered the father of mammographic screening) and received additional training in Sweden. The last 20 plus years of my life has been in breast cancer screening and work up.
Since my recent retirement I have built a boutique hotel (The Sandpiper Inn) and become an hotelier in Abaco, one of the 700 Islands of the Bahamas; I still struggle with remembering not to call my guests patients. I have resumed my hobbies of gardening, photography, tinkering with boats and cars, and most importantly loving my sweetheart and lifetime friend Carol.
