Memories
Memory 1
During my internship I vividly remember a 15 year old young man with a diagnosis of leukemia. He tried to maintain a positive attitude and we developed a special bond. Nevertheless he died within two weeks. His mother met me a few days later -her son had a gift for me -to say thank you- it was a plaque he kept in his room -it is 6”x 3“ made of wood-with the inscription “The sweetest flowers must fade, but the memory of a kindly deed lives on”. I still have the plaque -46 years later!!!!
Memory 2
Remember Dr. WooMing-a five year old boy was admitted via the emergency room with a whole peanut lodged at the bifurcation of the trachea. As an intern I was in the operating room. It was a very stressful 2-3 hours. As Doc used a forceps type instrument to grip the nut it would slip out of the forceps and rotate between the right and left bifurcation of the trachea with resulting cyanosis. The peanut was eventually removed. My daughter was three years old -I have a new respect for peanuts where young children are concerned!!!!!
Memory 3
Dr. Persaud gave us lectures on embryology. Remember we had chalk and a very long black- board in the lecture room. His energy and enthusiasm was contagious as he drew copious illustrations detailing the process from fertilization to development of the heart lungs limbs etc. -those lectures are riveted in my brain.
With such a complicated process the true miracle is that the majority of newborns are normal at birth -providing tremendous joy to so many mothers and fathers !!!!!!
