Memories
Memory 1
On two occasions (1967 – 1969), a group of us travelled from Jamaica to Trinidad on the now defunct Federal Maple and Federal Palm. These ships stopped at the West Indian Island Members of the Federation. They all stayed for one day in each island so we were able to meet colleagues and sightsee. In St. Lucia, Ira Simmon’s mother treated us to a delicious home- cooked meal, as accommodation and meals in board were rudimentary. We had great fun!
Memory 2
On 9th September, 1972, my friend and classmate Ashton Le Maitre and I were married at Aquinas Centre by Father Donald Reece (now Archbishop Reece), in the presence of my mother (who had grave doubts!), two priests, and four nuns. Guests included, Rohit Doon, Toni Heffes, Jacqueline Wharfe, Sat and Kathryn Maharaj, Alleah Hosein, Zuleika Ali, Liz Darville, Mike Da Silva, Dennis Pyne, Courtney Palmer, Roger and Denyse Radix, Cecil Samuels.
Our reception was held at University Close. On the menu was Chinese style chicken, fish, shrimp, and vegetables, fried and white rice. The wedding feast cost a princely sum of 60 JMD and we were able to enjoy leftovers for almost a week! Drinks offered were soft drinks, wine, rum and whisky, one bottle each. A beautiful wedding cake was arranged by my groom.
Memory 3
While standing around a crib during ‘Speedy’ Miller’s ward rounds, I heard a loud bang. I awoke lying on the floor. Apparently, I had struck the crib in my descent. Someone was elevating my legs and Prof. was checking my pulse. I had fainted for the first and so far only time in my life. I steadfastly denied being pregnant – after all I had not missed a period and Prof. Wynter had inserted a Lippes Loop. We later learned that it was discontinued because of unreliability. Nine months later, during my O & G Clerkship my first son was delivered by Dr. Syam Roopnarinesingh.
