St. John, Margaret Anne
1974 Biography 2018
Dr. St. John interned at the tertiary care Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) in Barbados, and residency training in Paediatrics- Paediatric Ambulatory Fellowship at Kings County/Downstate Medical Centre, Brooklyn, and was the first Fellow in Paediatric Infectious Diseases at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto.
In 1980, she rejoined staff as a Consultant (QEH), being department Head for a decade.
She was Chairperson of the Infection Control, and the Drug and Therapeutics Committees, for over 2 decades, retiring from the QEH, in mid-2018.
Formerly an Associate Lecturer in Child Health, Faculty of Medical Sciences, (FMS) UWI (Cave Hill Campus), She was promoted to Hon. Professor, in 2010, teaching paediatric skills to an estimated 1000 FMS graduates, residents pursuing a DM ( Paediatrics), and serves as an intercampus UWI examiner.
She has presented and published >150 peer reviewed articles, and abstracts, and is a reviewer (HIV). More recent research has focused on childhood obesity and NCDs. Dr St John has received numerous awards for her research, and was a National honouree in 2016.
She serves as a volunteer medical advisor to many local children’s Charities in Barbados and is a Director, of the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
She has also served as: Alumni President of her Alma Mater, is Editor of the Barbados Assoc. of Medical Practicioners’ Bulletin, and serves as a Member of the Privy Council of Barbados.
Professor St. John’s goals include travelling, gardening and rendering assistance to organizations, towards improving the health and quality of life for children, locally at an international level.
