“Today I brought my favourite book to show you but it’s broken because all of the pictures have been stolen out of it by the Green Goblin (superhero parties)/Naughty Pirate (pirate parties)/my naughty friend Pepper Pixie (fairy parties)/Wicked Queen or Witch or a magical dragon (princess parties)/Evil Sea Witch (mermaid parties).” Reveal the book and flip through it to display its blank pages. “So I need a volunteer to help me wish the pictures back into it. Ask the birthday child if they’d like to be your volunteer. If they do not, choose someone who puts their hand up. Give the volunteer the wand and tell them that on ‘Abracadabra’ they must tap the book with the wand. Everyone says “1, 2, 3 Abracadabra” and the volunteer taps the book. You flip through the book and it’s still blank because the children weren’t loud enough! Everyone says “1, 2, 3 Abracadabra” again (louder) and the volunteer taps the book. You flip through the book again to display the black lines that have magically appeared. “That was good but we need even more magic to wish some colour into the pictures. Let’s use the special wishing song to help us.” You sing ‘Starlight Starbright’ (if the children have learned the song earlier in the party then they help you sing) and everyone says “1, 2, 3 Abracadabra”. The volunteer taps the book with the wand as before. You flip through the book one last time to display the colour that has magically appeared on all of the pages.
The YouTube video will show you how to make the lines and colours appear and disappear. If you need to extend the activity, simply have the villain steal the colour again and repeat the activity with a new volunteer.
