Lesson Plan
NB: Please check with the Business Manager or your Head Sparkle to check if the nursery is happy to have a Halloween lesson. Please also ensure that your language is fun and silly as opposed to scary.
1. Warm-up: ‘Shake Your Sillies Out’ performed by The Wiggles
See weekly drama activity break down for video and instructions. Make sure to use lots of energy!
* Running time approx. 1 min 45 secs.
2. Focus activity: Name Game
See weekly drama activity break down for instructions.
* Running time approx. 3 mins (‘Let’s make a Circle’ should take a MAXIMUM of 30 seconds).
3. Travel to Storyland
See weekly drama activity break down for instructions.
* Running time approx. 4 mins (‘Let’s make a Circle’ should take a MAXIMUM of 30 seconds).
4. Introduce the theme
“Let’s take a look in the sparkly magic bag and see what clue there is for today’s story.” Take out the ghost laminate. Ask the children the following questions.
a) “What is this pretend creature called?”
b) “Where might we see ghosts (e.g. on TV, at Halloween, in a haunted house
etc.)?”
c) “And what sound do they make?”
d) “Let’s all pretend to be ghosts and make a ghostly sound!”
e) Ask a volunteer to suggest another Halloween creature. You act out being the
creature (using upper body) and the children copy you. Repeat using ideas from three more volunteers. If the volunteers have trouble coming up with suggestions, name some Halloween creatures for them to choose from (e.g. frogs, witches, giants, snakes, monsters, zombies and fairies).
* Running time approx. 2 mins 30 secs.
5. Action song or poem: ‘Sleeping Monsters’ (sung to the traditional tune
of ‘Sleeping Bunnies’)
“Who knows the ‘Sleeping Bunnies’ song?” I’m going to teach you how Halloween creatures play ‘Sleeping Bunnies’. First, we’re all going to be monsters and go to sleep and when we wake up, we are going to “roar”.
See the monsters sleeping, (the children lie down, pretending to sleep) ‘Till it’s nearly noon.
Shall we wake them,
With a SPOOKY tune?
