6. Choreographed Dance: ‘Fireman Sam’ performed by The C. R. S. Players Click activity name to open YouTube video link.
Reveal the laminate. Point to the firefighter and ask the children to name the job and say how they help us. “It’s time to learn a dance about a famous firefighter called Fireman Sam!” Teach the children the tricky moves first, then play the track and perform the dance all together, using the choreography from the video.
* Running time approx. 5 mins.
7. Action Song: ‘Miss Polly Had a Dolly’ (traditional)
Reveal the laminate. Point to the doctor and ask the children to name the job and say how they help us. Tell the children you know a song about a doctor who helped Miss Polly’s dolly. Mime the following actions as you sing the song three times.
N.B. If there is a doll at the setting, ask to borrow it and do the actions with the doll.
Miss Polly had a dolly who was sick, sick, sick, (rock a baby)
So she called for the doctor, (hold phone to ear)
To come quick, quick, quick. (make ‘come here’ motion with hand)
The doctor came with her bag and her hat, (pick up bag, then tap head) And she knocked on the door with a rat-a-tat-tat. (knock on the floor)
She looked at the dolly and she shook her head, (shake head)
She said “Miss Polly, put her straight to bed!” (waggle finger)
She wrote on a paper for some pills, pills, pills. (write on your palm) “I’ll be back in the morning with my bill, bill, bill.” (hold out paper)
* Running time approx. 3 mins.
8. Working with Props: ‘Catch that Fox!’ adapted from ‘The Gingerbread Man’ (folk tale)
“Who can tell me how farmers help us? That’s right, they grow us lovely food (like fruit and vegetables) and they look after animals. They also have to protect all the food from mischievous animals who try to steal the food!”
The children sit around the parachute. You give an egg shaker to a child who is going to be the mischievous fox who has stolen a hen’s egg. You choose another child to be the farmer. Everyone says the rhyme and shakes the parachute vigorously. When you say ‘run!’, everyone lifts the parachute up high. The fox and the farmer stand up (the rest of the children remain seated). The fox runs around the circle and the farmer chases them. The fox must try to get back to their place before the farmer catches them. Repeat the game several times, nominating a different fox and farmer each time. If you don’t have time for everyone to have a turn, ask an adult present to write down the names of the children who have not had a go and assure them that they will have their turn next week.
Run, run, as fast as you can!
Catch that fox, you’re the farmer man! One, two, three, run!
* Running time approx. 5 mins.
9. Warm-down and give out magic sparkles
See autumn lesson one.
* Running time approx. 3 mins.
