Activity: ‘Bananas of the World’ (traditional camp rhyme)
"Let's say a funny rhyme that will turn us all into bananas!" This activity is far more successful when you use lots of energy! Everyone is standing. Gradually lift straight arms out to the side until fingertips are touching above your head and you are the shape of a banana for the first and last lines. Gradually lower one straight arm out to side for the first 'peel' line and then do the same with the other arm for the second 'peel' line (as though you are the banana being peeled). Chop, mash and stir to the beat as indicated by the words. Alternate between eating to pulse with left and right hands for “eat bananas”. Go nuts for “go bananas” by jumping about and waving your arms in the air.
Words
Bananas of the world unite!
Peel bananas, peel, peel bananas,
Peel bananas, peel, peel bananas. Chop bananas, chop, chop bananas, Chop bananas, chop, chop bananas. Mash bananas, mash, mash bananas, Mash bananas, mash, mash bananas. Blend bananas, blend, blend bananas, Blend bananas, blend, blend bananas. (softly) Eat bananas, eat, eat bananas, (softly) Eat bananas, eat, eat bananas. (loudly) Go bananas, go, go bananas! (loudly) Go bananas, go, go bananas! Bananas of the world unite!
Other Ideas!
1. Ask volunteers to suggest other fruits and vegetables that require peeling and repeat the rhyme using their suggestions. E.g. Peel potatoes... Peel mandarins... Peel oranges etc.
2. Try to make several different fruit shapes using the entire body. Talk to the children about the differences between the different fruits’ shapes. E.g. A banana is long and curved, whereas an apple has a more rounded shape.
