C2.8 Site Signage; Marketing Suite
All signage will be supplied and installed free
issue by Butterfield Signs.
The ‘marketing’ signage suite is any signage
other than DOT type signs and includes banner
signs, all drive thru lane signage, height restrictor
signs, welcome, exit and freestanding directional
signs plus long range road signs. As set out in the
design section, there are two distinct types of
site signage; timberline and ERDDS styles.
The type, layout and quantity of signs will
be indicated in the designer’s drawings and
must be installed by the principal contractor.
The mass concrete foundations for future sign
positions must be -100 / 150mm below local
finished ground level with the surface finish
running continuously over the top.
Generally, Timberline signage is installed via
free issue tuning forks which should be cast
into mass concrete foundations. The mild steel
tuning forks will be free issued to the principal
contractor for their installation on to the mass
concrete foundations. The only exceptions are
the monolith height restrictor and banner signs
which are bolted in position by Butterfield Signs
onto mass concrete foundations by the principal
contractor. In all instances, the top of the mass
concrete foundations should be -200mm below
local finished groundlevel.
ERDDS signage is installed via free issue root
cages which should be cast into mass concrete
foundations. The root cages will be free issued
to the principal contractor for their installation
on to the mass concrete foundations. The mass
concrete foundations must be -100 / 150mm
below local finished ground level to allow
surface finishes over.

All foundations must be adequately cured and
all ground finishes reinstated prior to Butterfield
Signs installing the signs over the exposed ends
of the tuning forks.
Where difficult ground conditions are
experienced, site specific design must be
sought for all signage but especially the road
signs. Concrete mix to be suitably specified to
suit allowed curing window within the contract
programme.
Regardless of type of sign, an electrical duct
route must be cast in the centre of each sign
mass concrete foundation. Butterfield signs will
free issue a female socket terminal for McDrive
sign required. The principal contractor must
draw an appropriate external electrical supply
to each sign, terminated with the female socket
terminal. The supply for each sign must have
200mm slack cable above finished ground level
for final connection.
The site specific signage will be set out on the
designer’s signage setting out drawing. The
dimensions indicated will be from the centre of
tuning forks where appropriate.
Where road signage is being altered, or ground
works carried out around an existing road sign
then the foundations must be details so that
the anchor bolts remain above ground and are
readily available for regular visual inspections.
