FIRST IMPRESSIONS
For Istanbul we had half a day only.
Us three meandered into the morning
past window displays -- dried pomegranate, saffron and jasmine. Where a man roasted corn and someone sold towers of sesame bread
we wrapped our heads and shed our shoes, walked the mosque’s rugs of red and blue.
Tucked away a few alleys on
we followed stone steps,
down into the aqueduct where tides are watched and water channeled for centuries.
There they were, right at the back in the dusk.
Two pillars carved –
Medusa heads with slithering hair.
One sideways, one upside down.
Like every other time
when I got lost following my nose for photos, I found my friends again, tracking their laugh that echoed through the strange unknown.
