What is the Africanized honeybee’s life cycle?
It first starts out as a egg, from the egg they grow into a larva. Next, they grow even
more into a pupa. A pupa is the metamorphosis stage between adult and pupa. Next,
they grow into an adult. An adult the last stage of metamorphosis, they are now full
grown.
How did they get their name?
The Africanized honeybee is a hybrid between the western honeybee and the East
lowland honeybee, with various subspecies such as the European honey, Italian
honeybee, and the Iberian honeybee. With all the different honeybees, Africanized
honeybees are dangerous. They are stinging insects that have been known to chase
people for more than a quarter of a mile once they get excited and aggressive.
What is the average size of an Africanized honeybees?
Adult Africanized honeybees grow to an average of 19mm, which is small compared to
the average size of a European honeybee.
Do they produce honey like other honeybees?
Yes, they do. Just like any other bee, Africanized honeybees are pollen and nectar
feeders, and excellent pollinators. They feed on both nectar from flowers and pollen
from flowering plants.
What are the jobs of an Africanized honeybee?
Africanized honeybees have some traits that make them less desirable for commercial
bee keeping. But they have now become the dominant type of honey for bee keeping
in Central America and South America due to their genetic dominance as well as
ability. But on the inside of their hive, the worker bees are responsible for things like
gathering nectar, guarding, caring for the queen and larvae, cleaning, and of course,
producing honey.
