English III covers a chronological study of American literature, including essays, short stories, poetry, and novels. Composition and critical analysis of the literature are included. Students will study S.A.T. vocabulary and will write a major paper based on library research skills. It follows English I and II as UC/CSU preparation.

PREREQUISITE: Enrollment in English IV requires a “C” or better in each semester of English III. Must be in the AME Academy UC/CSU – Subject “B”
This course emphasizes analytical thinking, composition, and research using the classics of world literature. All students study grammar, vocabulary units and write the Documented Critical Essay. Shakespeare’s works are studied in each class. Literary selections, drawn from the Las Virgenes core literature, may include Greek tragedy, mythology, and British, South American, Continental, Asian and African classics. Students should expect continuous, independent reading and writing at an advanced level appropriate for college.

This course is required of all tenth grade students. Students study major turning points that shaped the modern world from the late eighteenth century through the present. Students will trace the rise of democratic ideas and develop an understanding of the historical roots of current world issues. Through this course, students will develop an understanding of current world issues and relate them to their historical, geographic, political, economic, and cultural contexts.

UC/CSU – Subject “A”
This course gives the student a sound & basic understanding of the United States today by showing its development through the 20th century. The course begins with a brief connective review of U.S. History up to the end of the nineteenth century. The primary focus is on United States History in the twentieth century. The development of the principles, institutions & traditions of the United Sates are set forth in this course. Students taking this course will be required to write a research paper or papers, which meet grade level English course requirements.
