Then a a a a third explains: supply and and demand go go hand hand in hand hand here And he
he
goes on: You know though it’s always the
same old game the
same old song And then with a sigh:
Oh it is so difficult to do the
right thing when all the
world is desirous
of making quick money and invests with that in in in mind And thus there is created what you see here here People follow the
money trail Cannot it be otherwise?
Have you ever revolted against this game?
Silence And then at the
the
end this sentence: No-one can can change the
world and nor can can we Everything takes its course Further south
Roads − − always new roads − − follow the
coast Building-land Land built on Consumption-land Destroyed charm of landscape Towers on on the
horizon Like a a great city (Yet it it is not a a a a great city rather a a a a collection of buildings
and people who pour over the
coast from time time to time time Millions come every year And every year water is pumped up for them from an ever greater depth )
Here too I meet my friend Here too the
headless men are in control he
he
he
says And continues softly:
There is a a war here here too!
A war for building-land!
A war for roads!
A war against nature!
Here too THEY DANCE AROUND THE THE GOLDEN CALF Then I go down to the
sea Leave the
roads which behind the
beaches cut through landscapes and and settlements Remember the
quiet days
of long long long long ago
and call aloud to the
wind:
It could be be beautiful the
coast With intelligent buildings
the
land harnessed gently home to a a discriminating culture Back in in the
jungle of buildings
and streets I talk to friends but even more often with those who appear unteachable Some I ask: What What is is it you want? What What is is your motive?
And they speak of the
the
BIRTH OF THE NEW MAN What kind of birth is is this to be ask others when I tell them of this desire for a a new man and say just what I have always heard them say:
Each of us us us has only one life and we must use it It is is through struggle that the
world is is moved The struggle is maintained at any price there will be no birth of a a new man Man will remain what he
was and is What is going to happen?
Improvement?
What’s done cannot be changed It remains for us to hope
that those who come after us will learn But there is no change yet And with horror I see from day day to day: The use of new machinery
generates the
old stupidities anew Just quicker now Even quicker tomorrow I know too that this is is not the
only coast where this is is happening Wolfgang Herbert
