for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God" (Romans 3:25). Hebrews uses this term for the mercy seat in the tabernacle (Hebrews 9:5). John also declares that "Christ is the propitiation for our sins: and not for our sins only, but also for the sins of the whole world" (I John 2:2; 1 John 4:10; Luke 18:13).
G It is Involved in Reconciliation
Qosely connected with the idea of propitiation, is the thought of recon ciliation. The two ideas seem to be related to each other as cause and effect. Christ's death propitiated God; consequently, God is reconciled. "For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son,muchmore,beingreconciled,weshallbesavedbyhislife" (Romans 5:10; cf. 11 Corinthians 5:18-f; Ephesians 2:16).
In sinning, Adam turned his back upon God; then God turned His back upon Adam. Christ's death has satisfied the demands of God, and now God has again turned His face toward man. It remains for man to turn around and face God. God has reconciled the world unto himself, "And having
made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself" (Colossicuis 1:20).
H It is a Ransom
Jesus Christ Himself declared that He had come to give His life a ransom for many (Mark 10:45). This specific mission is translated as redemption by various references in the New Testament. We read in Hebrews 9:12, " by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us." The following scriptures are closely related to this idea of ransom Luke 24:21; Titus 2:14; I Peter 1:18; Romans 3:24; Romans 8:23; I
Corinthians 1:30;Ephesians 1:7,14; 4:30;Colossians 1:14; Hebrews 9:15. This ransom is not paid to Satan, but to God. The debt that requires cancellation isowedtoGod. Satanhasnolegalclaimagainstthesinner.Ourredemption is hom:
• The penalty or "from the curse of the Law" (Galatians 3:13)
• The Law itself (Romans 7:4-6; 6:14)
• Sin as power (Romans 6:2,6; Titus 2:14; I Peter l:18-f)
• Satan (II Timothy 2:26; Hebrews 2:14)
• All evil, both physical and moral (Romans 8:23; Ephesians 1:14; Luke 21:28)
