Salome understood very little that he said in a mix ture of Dutch, Arabic, Oromo, and German, with a smat tering of English, but in the gracious Ethiopian manner of hospitality she motioned him to enter the house. Her husband spoke some German and could communicate with him in a small way.
Instinctively, they felt that God had sent him, and they prepared a small room for him off a porch at the front of their house. Though he never learned to speak Amharic properly, he quickly learned to read the Bible in Amharic, and often used the Scriptures to explain what he struggled to say.
At one point the authorities wanted to deport him, but Salome's husband pleaded his cause and promised to take care of him.
He often scolded the Ethiopians for believing in a trinity of gods. "The Moslems are wiser than you," he would declare. "At least they know that there is only one God."
When called to eat and asked to say grace, he often became lost in the Spirit, worshiping the Lord in other tongues. The family would hesitantly begin to eat and finish the meal and be gone long before he came to himself. Sometimes he knelt on the grass for hours, prais ing God, looking up to heaven at intervals and shouting, "Spirit of God, welcome!"
Frequently he interrupted the children at play with an open Bible. "This is God's Word; read here and here." Strangely, the children imderstood him better than the
